  8.           PASADENA--Appointment of project managers for the two  
  9. forthcoming Mariner-series deep space exploration mission to Venus 
  10. and Mars has been announced by Gen. A. R. Luedecke, Deputy Direc-  
  11. tor of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the California Institute  
  12. of Technology. 
  13.           Dan Schneiderman, Mariner IV project Manager, will  
  14. manage the Venus project.  It involves a single spacecraft to be  
  15. launched in 1967.  In addition, he will continue through 1967 in  
  16. the completion of his duties as Project Manager for the recently  
  17. successful Mariner IV mission to Mars. 
  18.           H. M. Schurmeier, former Ranger Project Manager and  
  19. currently Capsule System Manager for the Voyager series, will  
  20. manage the new Mars project, an effort involving two new Mariner  
  21. spacecraft scheduled for launch in 1969. 
  22.           Effective February 1, Schurmeier will relinquish his  
  23. duties as Voyager Capsule System Manager to Geoffrey Robillard,  
  24. who will also continue in his present duties as Deputy Voyager  
  25. Project Manager under Dr. D. P. Burcham, Luedecke said. 
  26.           Voyager is a planetary exploration spacecraft scheduled  
  27. for launch to Mars in 1973. 
  28.           JPL will design and build the two Mariner/Mars '69  
  29. spacecraft and modify a spare Mariner IV spacecraft for the Venus  
  30. mission in 1967.

  35. planetary mission by the National Aeronautics and Space Admini-  
  36. stration.
